Day 11, From Dresden to Neuwied
Tuesday, June 2, 2015
At half past six, I was already awake so I took a shower and loaded most of
my luggage on the GoldWing that was parked in front of the reception of the
hotel.
My beautiful GoldWing
The seat was still wet from the heavy rain tonight so I got a towel from my
room to dry the seat.
It is a beautiful sunny day. A contrast with the clouded and wet weather from
Monday.

We had breakfast at a quarter to eight and at half past eight we were already
on the road to Neuwied.
We left the hotel parking before half past eight
Our plan was to avoid the "autobahn", and the first part of the day was on
nice country roads and through nice rustic villages.
Beautiful countryside....
... and nice rustic villages
At a quarter to ten, we rode through the East German town Colditz. Colditz is
famous for its renaissance castle. "Schloss Colditz" is famous because it was
a prisoner-of-war camp during World War II for Allied officers who had
escaped from other prisoner-of-war camps.

There are many timbered houses and beautiful little churches in this area.

At a little after ten o'clock, we filled our tanks at a Total Station in Borna,
after riding a hundred kilometer. Then we parked our bikes near the shop and
bought cappuccino and donuts.
Time for cappuccino and donuts
Just when we wanted to leave, Dick dropped the connector, that he uses to
connect his earphone to his GPS, somewhere "inside" his BMW. After a long
time trying, he finaly got it out with a long coffee spoon from the Total
cafetaria.
He got it !
At a quarter to twelve, we made a short stop at Stadt Lutzen to look at the
town hall (well...I think it is the town hall) and take some pictures.
A short stop in Stadt Lutzen
Just outside Stadt Lutzen, we rode past a field that was filled with solar panels.
Do you call that a solar farm ?

At half past one, we were getting hungry so we stopped at a nice restaurant in
Kolleda, North of Erfurt. They had just "serious" meals on the menu but when we
asked, they could also serve sandwiches so we both got a very nice cheese sandwich.
The restaurant in Kolleda
The whole restaurant was decorated with cows and even the little pot with milk
for the coffee, looked like a cow.

We had to ride six hundred kilometer today to Neuwied but when we filled our
tanks at the Esso station in Bad Langensalza at twenty past three, we had only
done half of it. To save time, we decided to reprogram the GPS, to use the
autobahn, so we would be at the hotel in daylight (just..).
So we went to the autobahn
We tried to ride between hundred and hundred twenty kilometer per hour on the
autobahn while on some parts of the autobahn, with no speed limit, cars came
speeding by with two hundred kilometer per hour.
It was getting hot and in my warm clothes, riding on the straight autobahn, I
got sleepy so I signaled to Dick that I needed coffee. At the next Aral station,
we had a big cappuccino and cake and that made me feel a whole lot better.
At almost seven o'clock, we filled our tanks again at an Aral Tankstelle at the
B49 near Nord Beselich. Both our bikes had been riding very fuel efficient, doing
almost nineteen kilometer on each liter.
At the Aral Tankstelle
It was dinner time so after we parked our bikes, we bought a cappuccino and a
sandwich at the cafetaria.
After we got on our bikes again, we rode past the Rhine and saw the The nuclear
power station Mulheim Karlich.
After it was finished in 1986, it only operated for three years and in 1998,
the German supreme court decided that it will never be restarted.
At a quarter past eight, we arrived at the hotel in Neuwied, "Gastehaus der
food-akademie". It is a theme hotel with a supermarket theme.......
They had a perfect parking spot for our bikes, under a roof in the courtyard
so I guess they are safe here.
At the "Gastehaus der food-akademie"
After a beer in the bar, we went to our rooms for the night. Tomorrow we will
visit an old volcano lake and a cold water geyser nearby.
