Riding my GoldWing in Luxembourg

Page 1 2
Saturday, October 15, 2011

I had set my alarm in my cellphone at half past seven but went the alarm went of, I decided to sleep a bit longer. At eight o'clock I finaly came out of my bed to get a shower and then I walked downstairs to get breakfast.
The breakfast was just as good as the dinner last night with a lot of different bread specialities to choose from, several tastes of fruit juice, thea, coffe etc. I had a croissant, some bread filled with (I think it was) honey, a glass of fruitjuice and offcourse a cup of coffee.

After breakfast, I checked out and while the GoldWIng warmed up, I got into my motorcyclegear. When I left the hotel, the sun was shining through the trees and there were some goose on the road from the hotel to the main road.

Beautiful start of the day

From Consdorf I took the scenic route to Echternach. (In fact almost all roads in Luxembourg are scenic routes ).
From Echternach I took the road to Vianden because I wanted to get a picture of the GoldWing and the castle but on my way to Vianden I saw a sign Beaufort. In Beaufort is the ruin of a castle just outside the village and the road to Beaufort is a very nice winding road so I decided to make a detour to Beaufort.

The ruins of the castle of Beaufort

From Beaufort I took another very nice winding road to Vianden. Yesterday, I had to get used to the weight of the GoldWing in the hairpins and other tight corners but now I'm used to it and having a lot of fun riding these twisty roads.
I pass through some very nice villages and enjoy the views, the road and the very nice weather.

A small village between Beaufort and Vianden

After some very enjoyable riding, I arrived in Vianden and admired the view on the beautiful castle on the mountain top.

Last year on my visit of Luxembourg I stayed in a hotel in Vianden and visited the caste too. You can read all about it on my report of that trip.
This time I just stopped to take some pictures.

From Vianden I programmed the Tomtom to Weiswampach in the North of Luxembourg. Because of some roadworks I had to take a detour through Germany but that was no problem. It was a very nice, twisty road through forest and farmland and because it was Saturdaymorning, there was hardly any traffic on the road so I had a good time.

Beautiful scenery somewhere on the border of Germany and Luxembourg

Just when I crossed the border from Germany to Luxembourg again, I noticed a banner on the fence of a restaurant that said "Bikers Welcome". Well, it was time for a coffee stop so I walked inside to get a cup of cappuccino.

After my cofeebreak, I enterred Stavelot in Belgium in the Tomtom and soon I crossed the border from Luxembourg into Belgium but just before I crossed the border, I filled my tank one more time with the very cheap gas in Luxembourg.

After about fifteen or twenty minutes, I came in a very nice small village, Wanne, in Belgium. It has a war monument, like so many villages in the East of Belgium, some old buildings and a nice church.

A few minutes later I arrived in Stavelot, near the race circuit of Francorchamps. From Stavelot, I went in the direction of Eupen and from there I wanted to go to Vaals in the province of Limburg in the far South of the Netherlands.
When I was riding North from the center of Eupen I noticed a big golden M in the distance. That reminded me that I had not been eating since my breakfast and it was almost half past two. Nothing a cheeseburger and a milkshake can not resolve.....

McDonald's in Eupen

Close to the border to the Netherlands, I noticed a very long and high railroad viaduct, the "Viaduc de Moresnet". When I saw a freighttrain on the viaduct I could see how huge the viaduct really was. It crossed the valley for a few kilometers. Very impressive.

In the Netherlands, I went to the "Drielandenpunt" in Vaals. That is the point where Belgium, Germany and the Netherlands meet. It also is the highest point in the Netherlands, 322,5 meters above sealevel. It was not very interesting, just two small stone monuments and a tourist trap with restaurants and shops.

The "Drielandenpunt" tourist trap

It was almost four o'clock when I left the "Drielandenpunt" and I wanted to be home for dinner so from Vaals I took the boring freeway through Belgium, past Antwerp and then North into the Netherlands again and after about 650 km in two days, mainly on secondary roads, I parked the bike in my garage and had dinner at home with my wife and children.
