This year was the first
Horizons Unlimited Travelers Meeting in Belgium.
I am active at the
Horizons Unlimited BBS for some time now and could not let this chance
go to meet some of the people from the BBS in person.
I could get a day of work so on Friday afternoon I left home.
Soon I crossed the Belgium border and through Wuustwezel, I drove to Brecht.
Unfortunately, the road from Brecht to Oostmalle was closed so I drove
to Westmalle and then on some backroads to Oostmalle.
Through Herentals and past Geel I drove to Diest and had a nice cold
milkshake at Cafe Highway, an
American style cafe-restaurant.
From Diest I drove to Herk de Stad, then to Alken and finaly in the
direction of Tongeren until I saw a sign "Widooie". The Meeting was at the grounds
of the castle of Norbert de Schaetzen, in the village of Widooie.
At around half past five I arrived at the site and registered with
Grant and Susan Johnson, the founders of Horizons Unlimited.
I joked about my new tent but soon found out it was not a good joke.
......my tentpoles were missing......
Fortunately, Norberts son, Thierry was so kind to loan me his tent
so I did not have to drive all the way home to get another tent.
Registration.
The camping site.
Sjaak R1 Lucassen his bike.
(250.000 km around the world)
Having a beer (or cola) with new friends.
Grant Johnson and his bike.
After I put my sleeping bag and clothes in the tent, I went to the building
next to the castle, to get some dinner. It was not cheap but very very good !
I heard the owner of a restaurant in Widooie did the catering and he did a very good job!
After dinner, at 19:00 h, the presentatiosn started.
Norbert de Schaetzen and Grant Johnson introduce
the first speakers.
After some very interesting presentations, I went to bed at almost midnight. I'm not a real
camping fanatic but I did sleep resonable well. It was a clear sky so at night it was
cold but I had an extra sleeping bag so that was no problem.
Saturday, September 9th, 2006
I woke up at half past six, stayed in my warm sleepingbag for another half hour and then
got up. Breakfast was at eight so I had the time to walk around and look at the bikes and
the castle
